Utilization and recycling of sludge into fertilizer or soil are particularly relevant problems for all Russian water purification plants
During water purification, the layer of silt is formed, later it can be used in composting heaps, as fertilizer in agriculture for most crops and as ameliorant for soils, can also be used as soil for greening, restoration of "damaged land", recultivation of polygons and other facilities.
The presence of heavy metals and highly toxic and chemically stable compounds, the total elimination of which has always seemed impossible, has made the sludge extremely hazardous waste. The sludge is an enabling environment for the intensive development of virus, bacteria, and insects, for their spread in the atmosphere, soil and water basin, in most cases causing pollution of rivers and lakes.
Indispensable conditions for the processing of sludge are: its dehydration, decontamination, deactivation and mineralization of organic substance.
Sludge recycling technology allows reducing the concentration of heavy metals and highly toxic and chemically stable compounds to permissible limits (or to remove them).
